The Great Apes of Belle Vue: Their Role in a Franciscan Calling
Belle Vue Zoological Gardens in Gorton not only catered for the working people of the ‘Workshop of the World’, it also drew visitors from far and wide to visit the zoo, enjoy the fun of the fair, attend concerts, and dance in the famous ballrooms.
Long before becoming a Franciscan priest, David Gray worked with the Great Apes at Belle Vue. It was the final year before the site closed. Years later, he was the community coordinator on the team formed to restore the famous Franciscan Monastery in Gorton.
He has also worked to see a return of facilities inspired by Belle Vue in his home city. Animals behind bars form no part of David’s vision for the future.
If you’ve ever looked into the eyes of an animal and wondered, ‘If you were not so dumb, you would be able to tell me what you are thinking’ then read The Great Apes of Belle Vue. Be ready to accept that the animal may be looking back and thinking, ‘If you were just a little brighter, I wouldn’t have to.’
This is a book about life and the universe that has the power to change your view of who you are forever – and leave you better for it. Enjoy!
